Help with MotorFile

Most answers are below. If yours is not, email us — a person reads it.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself, from inside the app: Profile → Delete Account. It asks you to confirm, and there is no undo.

If you have already removed the app, email [email protected] from the address you signed up with and we will do it for you.

What that removes: your name, email, saved vehicles, reminders and search history, permanently, within 30 days. What it keeps: the record that a purchase happened, because UK tax law requires us to retain sales records — but it is detached from you, and holds nothing that identifies you.

Common questions

The MOT or tax status looks wrong. Can you change it?+
No — and neither can anyone else outside DVLA and DVSA. MotorFile shows what the official records say; it does not hold its own copy of the truth. If a record is genuinely wrong, it has to be corrected at source with DVLA or DVSA, and MotorFile will show the correction once it appears. Records can also lag by a day or two after a test or a tax renewal.
A check came back with nothing found. Was I still charged?+
A paid check is only worth paying for if it returns something. If a report came back empty or missing sections you paid for, email [email protected] with the registration and the date, and we will refund it. You do not need to argue the case.
What does “not checked” mean on a report?+
Exactly what it says: we hold no data for that check, so we are not telling you it is clear. A missing answer is never shown as a pass. If a check has genuinely run and come back clean, the report says so explicitly.
Why do fuel prices near me look out of date?+
Prices come from retailers' own published feeds, which they update at their own pace — some hourly, some far less often. Each station shows when its price was last published, so you can judge it. We never estimate a price we have not been given.
The plate scanner will not read my number plate.+
Recognition runs entirely on your device, so it needs a clear view: square on, filling a good part of the frame, and out of direct glare. Dirty, damaged or non-standard plates may not read at all — you can always type the registration in instead.

Where the data comes from

Free checks use DVLA and DVSA records. Paid reports additionally use a licensed provider. MotorFile is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, DVLA or DVSA — we present their records, we do not hold or amend them.

How we handle your data is set out in our privacy policy.
