Frequently asked questions
When is my first MOT due?
Most cars in Great Britain need their first MOT by the third anniversary of first registration, not the purchase date. GOV.UK shows the due date for any registration plate.
Can I MOT early and keep my date?
Yes. You can take the test up to a month (minus a day) before the current MOT expires and the new certificate still runs from the old expiry date. Any earlier and the date resets. See GOV.UK: Getting an MOT.
Do I need to tax a car that is exempt?
Usually yes. An exempt vehicle normally still has to be taxed at no cost, or declared off the road with a SORN. GOV.UK lists which vehicles qualify and what to do.
Are the reminders free?
Yes. MOT and tax reminders are free with a MotorFile account. They go out 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before each date, by email, and as push notifications in the iPhone app.
